A cochlear implant works when a microphone picks up sounds and sends them to a small speech-processing computer worn on the user’s belt or behind the ear. The electric signals from the speech processor are transmitted to an implanted receiver, which sends the signals via electrodes to the cochlea, where the signals directly stimulate the auditory nerve.
