In 2011, presidential candidate Herman Cain said, “Don’t blame Wall Street, don’t blame the big banks. If you don’t have a job and you are not rich, blame yourself!” Research on the correspondence bias suggests that it is easy to blame people’s outcomes on their dispositions, such as stupidity and laziness, and difficult to consider the ways in which they might be victims of their situations.
