Dominant therapy orientations of Canadian clinical psychologists in 2009/2010. This chart shows the percentage of practitioners (out of the 538 who returned survey information) who chose each theoretical orientation as one to which they subscribed (Hunsley et al., 2013). The results of a large number of studies conducted over the last 30 years demonstrate the efficacy of cognitive behavioural therapy over other forms of therapy for a wide range of mood, anxiety, substance-abuse, personality, and psychotic disorders, and there is a strong emphasis on evidence-based treatment in Canadian clinical psychology training programs (Hunsley et al., 2013; Task Force of Empirically Supported Treatments, 1998). It is not surprising, therefore, that a cognitive and behavioural orientation is the most popular orientation.
