Derek Boogaard, a professional hockey player for the New York Rangers, died of a drug overdose in 2011 at the age of 28. After his death, his brain was observed to be reduced in size, with fluid-filled spaces where brain tissue should be. This is characteristic of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, CTE, a progressive degenerative disease caused by repeated blows to the head.
