Black Box A growing number of children and teenagers are taking SSRIs to combat depression, but these medications may increase the risk of suicidal behaviors and thoughts for a small percentage of youth. For this reason, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) requires manufacturers to include a “black box” warning on the packaging of these drugs (National Institute of Mental Health, 2013).
