War-Torn Somalia Mohamed’s family comes from the East African nation of Somalia (shaded red on the map). They fled their homeland in 1991 during a violent government overthrow that led to more than 20,000 civilian deaths (Gassmann, 1991, December 21). The image on the right shows a group of Somali rebels in the capital city of Mogadishu about a month after the regime was toppled.
