Table : TABLE 9.3 TREATMENT OF EATING DISORDERS
Treatment OptionsDescription
Counseling and psychotherapyTreatment may involve individual, group, or family counseling. The focus of counseling and psychotherapy can be on nutrition, psychological issues, or thoughts and behaviors surrounding the eating disorder.
Health care and medical monitoringMany eating disorders result in serious medical crises. Medical monitoring and care are critical when it comes to the patient’s health.
Drug therapiesAlthough drugs will not prevent, cure, or restore an individual to a normal weight, drug therapies may be useful in treating the mood issues (often anxiety and depression) that can accompany eating disorders.
Effective treatment of eating disorders often involves a combination of approaches tailored to the individual. This tends to be more effective than one type of treatment alone.
