The miners communicated with the outside world through 6-inch-wide boreholes running from inside the mine to the ground above. Using one of these passageways, rescuers sent the men small containers known as palomas, or “doves,” holding letters from family members (BBC News, 2010, October 14; Quilodran, 2010, August 24).
