Chapter Wrapup

Proper georeferencing of data is a key element of working with geospatial technology and allows for all types of maps and imagery to work side by side with other forms of geospatial data. As noted in Hands-on Application 3.3: Georeferenced National Park Maps, this chapter’s lab will have you apply all of this chapter’s concepts using the MapCruncher program. You’ll start with an unreferenced campus map, and by the end it should be properly aligned with a real-world dataset. Also, check out the Apps, Blogs, and Social Media box for more about historic maps online, follow the David Rumsey Historic Maps through social media, and take a look at a YouTube video about online georeferencing tools.

In the next chapter, we’ll be looking at the Global Positioning System, an extremely useful (and freely available) system for determining your position on Earth’s surface, and providing you with a set of coordinates so that you can find where you are.
