The sociocultural context of development includes the set of physical and social environments in which an individual develops. A key feature of the sociocultural context is an individual’s socioeconomic status. Evidence of the three boys’ SES is apparent in their speech, clothing, homes, schools, and even in their choice of reading material. The boys acknowledge the impact of the sociocultural context when they agree that education has afforded them options, but they appear to be unclear as to whether individuals who are less advantaged necessarily have fewer options than they do.
