The combination of a newspaper profile and photo essay offers a richer, clearer picture of Brockton High than a print piece alone would provide. This picture is created through the reporter’s research and interviews and through details from the photo essay: both in the images themselves and in their captions.

ANALYZE & WRITE

Write a paragraph or two analyzing how textual and visual details bring to life the school and the mission to improve its performance in “4,100 Students Prove ‘Small Is Better’ Rule Wrong”:

  1. Skim the article, looking for examples of the following:
    • background information
    • summaries of important events
    • descriptions and observations
    • quotations of interview subjects
Taken together, what dominant impression of Brockton High do these elements create?
  2. Now consider how the photos build on this impression. For example, what do photos 1, 3, and 4 tell you about the student population? How does photo 2 support and build on the description of Susan Szachowicz from paragraph 9 of the article?
  3. How well do the text and photos work together to fulfill the writer’s and photographer’s purpose—presumably, to give us an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at a high school that has turned itself around? Do you have any remaining questions about Brockton High and how it improved its performance? What other textual or visual information might have helped to address your questions?
