Professional Clip 02: Winston Churchill, St. James Palace Speech

Throughout World War II, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill gave stirring speeches that boosted the morale of the British people as they waged war at home and abroad against Adolf Hitler and the Nazi war machine. Churchill, one of the great speakers of the twentieth century, gave this speech to ambassadors of the Allied nations in June 1941, six months before the United States officially entered the war after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In this selection, Churchill speaks confidently from manuscript and makes strong appeals to pathos (emotion) throughout. He employs many effective speech techniques including vivid language, powerful hand gestures, clear pronunciation, and excellent vocal variety.
