On March 18, 2012, musician Bruce Springsteen delivered the opening address, or keynote speech, for the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference & Festivals in Austin, Texas. Springsteen’s hour-long speech was well received and widely reported by journalists as setting the perfect tone for the festival.16 “Bruce Springsteen . . . offered the most thoughtful, poignant and humorous speech over the last 15 years of the event,” reported journalist Ed Condran.17 The immediate audience for Springsteen’s speech consisted largely of journalists and music professionals, as well as music fans attending the festival lucky enough to get a seat in the auditorium.
