SUSTAINABLE AMERICA

Sustainable America is a Stamford, Connecticut–based nonprofit organization that is dedicated to raising awareness and proposing solutions addressing impending crises in national fuel and food consumption. Its goal –– to decrease America’s oil usage while increasing food production –– begins with a series of small, albeit important, sustainable changes that people can make in their day-to-day lives. On its Web site, the organization combines text, graphics, and blog posts to explain key issues and motivate readers to ecologically sustainable action.

In September 2012, Sustainable America published the following infographic in a blog post titled “How to Compost in Your Apartment: Our Illustrated Guide for Beginners.” According to the Environmental Protection Agency, food waste is the largest component of solid waste in America’s landfills and incinerators. By explaining the process of composting in an accessible, easy-to-follow way, Sustainable America demonstrates how everyday small steps can lead to potentially big results: reducing waste, increasing resource efficiency, and empowering individuals.
