Chapter 5, Additional Case 2: Making a Question-and-Answer Sheet

This case is best for individuals.

Background

You are an assistant to Cari M. Dominguez, Chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The EEOC has published a number of fact sheets, such as the one entitled "Facts About Sexual Harassment." Ms. Dominguez tells you she has received several requests for a question-and-answer sheet on sexual harassment that can be posted in workplaces. "Would you mind taking care of this for me? Make sure it is easy to understand, even for nonnative speakers. And be sure you use examples so that it doesn't sound like legalese."

Your Assignment

To complete this case, perform the following tasks:

  1. Study Chapter 5, focusing on the individual characteristics of readers.
  2. Study the fact sheet on sexual harassment.
  3. When planning the question-and-answer sheet, consider the following questions:
    • Who is the reader?
    • What are the reader's attitudes and expectations?
    • Why and how will the reader use the sheet?
  4. Drawing on the fact sheet, write a one-page question-and-answer sheet that can be distributed to companies and other organizations requesting it.
