Chapter 9, Additional Case 1: Barbecuing Those Ribs

Chapter 9, Additional Case 1: Barbecuing Those Ribs

This case is best for groups.

Background

Although some of your close friends don't know this about you, one of your favorite guilty pleasures is barbecued ribs. You've tried all the rib places in a 50-mile radius, and in the summer, when it's hot, you love to get together with some like-minded friends and barbecue a big batch of pork ribs. The competition among this group for the best technique is friendly but intense. You've bookmarked the site Barbecue'n on the Internet, one of your favorite sources for barbecue ideas.

For this project you will analyze and (perhaps) revise a set of instructions to make it more coherent.

Your Assignment

To complete this case, perform the following tasks:

  1. Study Chapter 9, focusing on revising coherent text, and Chapter 20 on instructions and manuals.
  2. Print the recipe for making pork ribs from Barbecue'n on the Internet.
  3. Make a list of those aspects of coherence (such as paragraph structure and development and the use of lists and headings) that need improvement in the instructions. Then make a list of those aspects of instructional writing (such as safety information, lists of materials and other introductory information, step-by-step instructions, and concluding information) that could be improved.
  4. Present your findings in a 1,000-word memo to your instructor. (See Chapter 14 for information about memos.) For each aspect of coherence and instructional writing that you would revise, provide an example from the original instructions that demonstrates the problem and then describe how you would fix it.
