W3 Appropriate Words

Instructor's Notes

LearningCurve activities on appropriate language are available at the end of the Word Choice section of this handbook.

Choose words carefully to give your writing the appropriate level of formality, without slang, bias, or pretentious language. The following sentences illustrate how appropriate words can convey a sense of environment.

Taking your essay assignment into account, reword as necessary to avoid shifts in the level of formality.

W3-b Limit the use of slang in formal writing situations.

Although slang may be appropriate in dialogue used to define a character or a situation in a narrative, it should not be used in formal academic writing. Replace inappropriate slang expressions with more formal words.
