Figure 9.30(a) Saturn and its rings completely fill the field of view in this natural color image taken by the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft on March 27, 2004. Color variations in the rings reflect differences in the composition of the materials that make them up, such as ice and rock. The Cassini-Huygens scientists will investigate the nature and origin of the rings as the mission progresses. (b) The surface of Titan is strewn with “rocks” of ice composed of frozen methane and other carbon-containing compounds.
