The Colors of Io (a) This true-color image of Io shows a striking yellow surface. Numerous volcanoes dot Io’s surface, spewing out sulfur compounds. Sulfur (S) appears yellow, sulfur dioxide (SO2) appears white, and S3 and S4 appear red. (b) Here on Earth, we find yellow and white sulfur formations around volcanic vents.
