Figure 18-3: Ionization and Recombination In an H II region, the characteristic red glow of emission nebulae (like those shown in Figure 18-1 and Figure 18-2) comes from gas atoms that are excited by ultraviolet radiation from nearby hot stars. While many photons are emitted during recombination, only some are visible, and red is the most common.
