Variety in Spiral Arms The differences from one spiral galaxy to another suggest that more than one process can create spiral arms. (a) NGC 628 is a grand-design spiral galaxy with thin, well-defined spiral arms. (b) NGC 4414 is a flocculent spiral galaxy with fuzzy, broken, and poorly defined spiral arms.
