A Starburst Galaxy Prolific star formation is occurring at the center of the irregular galaxy M82, which lies about 3.6 Mpc (12 million ly) from Earth in the constellation Ursa Major. M82 also contains an unusual X-ray source, shown in Figure 21-16.
