Chicago Street This lantern slide depicts State Street, a major commercial thoroughfare in Chicago about 1890. The modern skyscraper (center right) contrasts with the dirt road and horse-pulled wagons. The number of horses and people in the photo is about the same. Notice that rules of the road familiar today did not exist; wagons traveled any part of the road in any direction. Pedestrians crowded along the sidewalk, avoiding the danger and dirt of the street.
