More than half a decade ago thousands of Americans lost their lives in the tragedy surrounding September 11th, 2001. Millions still suffer the losses of loved ones each and every single day. On October 26th of 2006 The New York Times reported that an additional 200 remains were discovered at the Ground Zero site, proving that clearly this disaster is far from closure. Six years have passed and you can still see a gaping hole in Lower Manhattan, a chasm that can only begin to reflect the void in the hearts and minds across the entire United States . The families and friends of the victims deserve a physical embodiment of their healing and a headstone marking this tragedy. In February of 2002 the City of New York announced the winner of an architectural competition for the planning and rebuilding of Lower Manhattan. The task of reconstruction was awarded to Studio Daniel Libeskind in their design of Memory Foundations. This plan garnered more than 80% of the popular vote in the design competition, according to the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation's voter analysis completed in January of 2002. But this was five years ago. Why haven't we seen any single aspect of this design come to fruition? The families and friends of the victims still have no memorial, save a gaping wound no testimony to the valor and no defiance of terror and no hallowed ground to commemorate the sacrifice that our citizens made. It's past time for a headstone.
