Backing up the thesis

A-54

Arguments of any complexity contain lines of argument that, when taken together, might reasonably persuade readers that the thesis has merit. If you sum up your main lines of argument, you will have a rough outline of your essay.

The outline will consist of your central claim—the thesis—and any supporting claims that back it up. In your paper, you will provide evidence for each of these claims. The claims together with evidence build your lines of argument.
