THE SLANTED TYPE known as italics is more than just a pretty typeface. In the sentence “Many people read People on the subway every day,” the italics (and the capital letter) tell us that People is a publication. Italics give words special meaning or emphasis. But remember not to overuse italics to emphasize important words: doing so will get very boring to readers very quickly.
