Using Language That Builds Common Ground

  • Check for stereotypes and other assumptions that might come between you and your readers. Look, for instance, for language implying approval or disapproval and for the ways you use we, you, and they. (18a)
  • Avoid potentially sexist language. (18b)
  • Make sure your references to race, religion, sexual orientation, and so on are relevant or necessary to your discussion. If they are not, leave them out. (18c and d)
  • Check that the terms you use to refer to groups are accurate and acceptable. (18c and d)
