Writing Practice:
Developing an analysis of a written text

In your school’s newspaper or in a local newspaper, search for an editorial on a topic that interests you. (An editorial is an opinion article published on a newspaper’s or magazine’s editorial page.) Take notes on the editorial using the questions in section A1-b. Then put the author’s thesis to the “So what?” test (see section A1-a). Follow the guidelines for analyzing a text in section A1-d and the writing guide in section A1-e to help you develop your own analysis of the editorial. Write your notes below—these will be a first step in looking at the article analytically.
When you are finished, click Submit to record your answer. You may review your answers by returning to the exercise at any time. (An exercise reports to the gradebook only if your instructor has assigned it.)
