Explain

  • Begin with the author’s name, followed by the date and the book’s title.

  • See General guidelines for listing authors for advice about variations.

  • End with the place of publication and the name of the publisher.

  • Take the information about the book from its title page and copyright page. If more than one place of publication is given, use only the first; if more than one date is given, use the most recent one.

  • Give the city and state (abbreviated) for all US cities.

  • Give the city and country (not abbreviated) for all non-US cities.

  • Include the province (not abbreviated) for Canadian cities.

  • Do not give a state if the publisher's name includes it (as in many university presses, for example).
