Avoiding plagiarism by integrating and citing sources

When you use another writer’s words or ideas, you must treat that material according to standard academic practice in the text of your paper, a process called integrating sources. This chart will help you determine how to integrate and cite your sources to avoid plagiarism.

The examples in the chart are given in MLA style. For some classes, you may be expected to follow APA or Chicago (CMS) style.

No matter what style you follow, you must provide a list of your sources at the end of your paper (the list is called Works Cited in MLA, References in APA, and Bibliography in Chicago).
