Common verb + preposition combinations

Many verbs and prepositions appear together in idiomatic phrases. Pay special attention to the combinations that are different from the combinations used in your native language.

Example sentence with editing. Original sentence: Your success depends of your effort. Revised sentence: Your success depends on your effort. Explanation: The preposition “on” has replaced the preposition “of” following the verb “depends.”

See the chart for various combinations, or check an ESL dictionary for combinations that are not listed in the chart.
