Abbreviations for organizations and other common terms

Many familiar abbreviations, capitalized and written without periods, are acceptable in formal writing.

Initialisms are abbreviations formed from the first letters of words (MLB, HTTP); acronyms are initialisms that can be pronounced as words (NATO, AIDS).
