Unlike other languages, English does not allow objects or adverbs to be repeated in adjective clauses. The relative pronoun (that, which, whom) or relative adverb (where) in the adjective clause represents the object or adverb.

Example sentence with editing. Original sentence: The apartment that we rented it needed repairs. Revised sentence: The apartment that we rented needed repairs. Explanation: The word "it" has been deleted.

The pronoun it cannot repeat the relative pronoun that.

Example sentence with editing. Original sentence: The small town where my grandfather was born there is now a big city. Revised sentence: The small town where my grandfather was born is now a big city. Explanation: The word "there" has been deleted.

The adverb there cannot repeat the relative adverb where.
