Tips for assessing genre in a writing assignment

When you know the genre you are assigned or have chosen for an assignment, the following tips will help you find places in Writer’s Help that will make you more familiar with the requirements and expectations for writing in that genre.
Find a model for the particular genre you need to write
- Search Writer’s Help for “model papers” and select “directory to sample student writing, by genre (type).”
- The directory contains links to various genres of writing. Annotations on the models will help you understand the expectations for different genres. Study the models for patterns you can use.
- Search Writer’s Help for specific genres, such as “lab report” or “proposal” and study specific models.
- Search Writer’s Help for “writing guides” to check for specific advice and examples for the genre you are writing.
- Ask your instructor for a model paper.
Note specific features of the genre
- Does the genre have a recognizable format and organization?
- Does the genre use particular kinds of evidence, information, and research?
- Is there Does the genre use a specialized vocabulary or style?
- Does the genre have an expected citation style?
Become familiar with the genres in your discipline
- See Writing in the Disciplines for a discussion of many different genres.
- Search specifically for advice about genres in your field—for example, nursing or business or engineering.
- Examine the journals in your field to see examples of published genres (columns, essays, research reports, literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, book reviews, notes and comments, editorials).

with your instructors about common genres in your discipline. Ask for examples of genres your instructors read and write.
Pay particular attention to document design for various genres
- Search Writer’s Help for “document design.” You will find extensive information and examples that will help you design documents for various genres.
- Determine the style and format that applies to your discipline: MLA, APA, Chicago, CSE.
- Notice how charts, tables, graphs, photographs, or other visuals are used in various genres. How are the visuals placed in each genre? How is the source of the data indicated? Search Writer’s Help for “using visuals.”
