Visual with no author (artwork, photograph, table, graphic) (MLA)

MLA-79

In-text citation

While the occurrence of diabetes in adults has slowed or decreased throughout Asia over the past thirty years, it has increased significantly in the United States (“Diabetes Prevalence”).

Explain

  • Cite as you would any source without an author, giving the title of the work in your text or a shortened title in parentheses.
  • If the visual has a figure number in the source, use the abbreviation “fig.” and the number in place of a page number in your parenthetical citation: (“Shifting Demographics,” fig. 4). If you refer to the figure by number in your text, spell out the word “figure.”
  • If the visual is a numbered table, use the label “table” and the number in your text (if you refer to it by number in your text) or in parentheses.
  • Titles of works of art and photographs are italicized. Titles of other visuals are usually not italicized. See specific works cited entries (linked at bottom of page) for more information.
