Explain

  • Begin with the author and title of the source, as for a document from a Web site.
  • Give information about the type of source in brackets following the title.
  • If there is no title, give a brief description of the content of the source in brackets in place of the title.
  • If the item is numbered in the source, indicate the number in parentheses after the title and before the bracketed label.
  • If the material appears within a larger document, do not italicize the title of the graphic. Treat it as a section in a Web document.

Note on breaking URLs and DOIs

  • If you must break a URL or a DOI at the end of a line, break it after a double slash or before any other mark of punctuation.
  • Do not add a hyphen.
  • Do not put a period at the end of the entry.
