Fixing run-ons with a comma and a coordinating conjunction

There are seven coordinating conjunctions in English: and, but, or, nor, for, so, and yet. When a coordinating conjunction joins independent clauses, it is usually preceded by a comma.

Example sentence with editing. Original sentence: The paramedic asked where I was hurt, as soon as I motioned toward my pain, he cut up the leg of my favorite pair of jeans. Revised sentence: The paramedic asked where I was hurt, and as soon as I motioned toward my pain, he cut up the leg of my favorite pair of jeans.

As soon as is a transitional expression, not a coordinating conjunction, so it cannot be used with only a comma to join independent clauses.
