Why do you think the government requires us to identify by race? What are some benefits and drawbacks in our doing so?

What does it mean to be American? Because the United States is often described as a nation of immigrants, Americans can’t be easily identified by race, ethnicity, or religion. So how do we identify ourselves as individuals and as part of a larger group? Does patriotism unite us? And what about the role of money and social class? This cluster of readings explores these questions on American cultural identity and includes an editorial, a social history/editorial, and part of an ad campaign.
