Pollution & Activism

Environmental pollution takes many forms, from the catastrophic, headline-grabbing oil spill to the much slower and more subtle leaking of chemicals and pollutants into the air, soil, and water. As citizens have learned more about how pollution affects our ecosystems and health, many have become outraged at the corporations that cause pollution. An environmental justice movement has been born out of this outrage, focusing on the idea that everyone, regardless of race or class or location, deserves clean air and water. This cluster examines the environmental justice movement (Kokmen), the U.S. government’s response to the BP oil spill (Obama), and two forms of protest against environmental pollution (Environmental Defense Fund, Credo Action). This cluster focuses on the idea that everyone, regardless of race or income, has a right to clean air and water, and explores connections between pollution and public health.
