Reinterpreting Gestalts Recall a situation in which you constructed an immediate Gestalt about someone you met. In later interactions you had with that person, how did your Gestalt change, if at all? Were there instances where the halo effect or the horn effect distorted new information you had to interpret about this person? How could you have used the five steps of perception-checking (p. 53) to modify your impression?
Practicing Empathy Write a paragraph describing a challenging communication context that would be difficult for you to experience or express empathy. Then, share your description of a challenging context with a classmate and revisit the discussion about empathy on pp. 53-57. Role-play by having your classmate create the challenging context, while you respond with statements that display empathy.
