Explain

  • Begin with the author’s name, followed by the date in parentheses and the book’s title.
  • See How to list authors for advice about variations.
  • End with the place of publication and the name of the publisher.
  • Take the information about the book from its title page and copyright page. If more than one place of publication is given, use only the first; if more than one date is given, use the most recent one.
  • Give the city and state for all US cities. Use postal abbreviations for all states.
  • Give the city and country (not abbreviated) for all non-US cities. Include the province (not abbreviated) for Canadian cities.
  • Do not give a state if the publisher’s name includes it (as in many university presses, for example).
