In the citation-name system, the list of references is created first, with entries alphabetized by authors’ last names. The entries are numbered according to their alphabetical order, and the numbers are used in the text to cite the sources from the list.

The citation-name reference list entries are formatted the same as citation-sequence entries. The only difference is the order in the reference list.
