Agreement with fractions and units of measurement

In general, when fractions or units of measurement are used with a singular noun, treat them as singular; when they are used with a plural noun, treat them as plural.

SINGULAR

Example sentence: Three-fourths of the pie has been eaten.

Example sentence: Twenty inches of wallboard was covered with mud.

PLURAL

Example sentence: One-fourth of the truck drivers were women.

Example sentence: Five pounds of ostrich feathers were used to make the scarf.
