When the demands or desires of one party are in conflict with those of another—be it a divorce, a labor-management negotiation, or an international dispute—no one wants to be treated unfairly. And with 1.2 million divorces every year in the United States alone, and crises such as we’ve seen in the Middle East for decades, it is certainly worth asking: Can mathematics help in the search for procedures that can ensure fair and equitable resolutions of such conflicts?
