What do these forms of electronic communication have in common: the Internet, smartphones, GPS trackers, satellite TV and radio, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and iTunes? One answer is that mathematics plays a hidden but central role in the way these media store, transmit, and secure digital data. In this chapter, we explain some of the basic ideas that underpin information science.
